Job searches suck, you are not alone

Searching for a tech job is hard. You endlessly scroll through job boards, send out countless resumes, write hundreds of cover letters, have tons of intro calls, and hear back nothing. With no feedback, you don’t know if you are working on the right tasks.

In 2023, I was laid off by Twitter when Elon Musk took over. I was not prepared. I found myself scrambling to find a new role. I had limited time, and rapidly falling savings account. On top of that, job search require so many tasks its tough to keep organized during the mounting stress.

In the past I would apply to hundreds of jobs and pray for a result. The spray-and-pray method didn’t work then and it didn’t work now. I needed a better strategy.

Get organized and get better results

Instead of applying to places frantically, I asked myself a question. How can do organize my search so I know what I need to do at every stage? With this question I started to get organized.

After every application, recruiter call, and interview, I took notes to determine what was the next action I can take to keep the process moving. Every detail was tracked. I did this for weeks. After 4 weeks, I achieved a flow state.

Everyday I had a conversation lined up. Every week I had data to make an informed decision next step.I developed a system where I could take action daily. I was finally seeing consistent feedback. I followed this rhythm, until it happened.

A proven system leads to a better result

93 days later, I found a my next role! I had no idea it would take 3 months to land that role. However the system I built gave me the confidence to keep going. I knew what to do and how to do it, allowing me to go the distance. And now with my search complete, I’d like to share it with you!

My name is Steven Natera. I am a software engineer with a decade of experience. During each of my job searches I managed to get a larger compensation than the last. I grew my earnings from 0 to $250k per year.

Throughout my career, I worked for both small and large companies. In my last role I was a Site Reliability Engineer at Twitter. My team managed over 500k servers, processing more than 5 million requests per second.

Then on November 3, 2022 I was laid off as a result of the acquisition of Twitter by Elon Musk. I found myself once again looking for a new job. But this time I used a framework to search better, get better feedback, and find a better role.
